How Being Too Productive Can Lead to Overeating (and How to Stop It)

Foodist_Podcast

Shelbey came to me wondering why she has the habit of overeating when she’s alone and supposed to be studying. She sits down to eat and turns on the TV, planning to finish dinner and then hit the books. But instead she usually keeps eating through the entire show until she feel so sicks she can’t do anything at all.

To her credit Shelbey has already thought through possible psychological reasons she’s doing this, but hasn’t come up with any solutions. She’s a very hard working woman who is always pushing herself for self-improvement. She’s a good student, exercises regularly, and meditates often. What she never does is give herself permission to relax.

One of the symptoms of being too productive is having anxiety about down time. All humans need to relax and recharge both physically and mentally, but highly productive people often feel guilty and anxious about taking these much needed breaks. If this goes on for too long it can lead to avoidance behaviors like overeating.

It can be difficult to acknowledge that rest is needed, but Shelbey and I come up with a plan for her to recognize her anxiety and give her the space to unwind.

What Recourse Do We Have When a Restaurant Lies to Us?

Maybe it’s just me…or perhaps it’s today’s political culture…but I just don’t find it difficult to tell the truth. More than that, I find it almost impossible to lie. Here’s an example: Dude, how old are you? I’m 43. Really? I’m 53. See? That first answer felt awful. Dude, are you happily married? Indeed! Dude, […]

Is this Celiac Awareness or Fear-Mongering?

I’m warning you ahead of time…this post may be a bit sloppy and all over the place (kinda like my sex life when I was younger) as I’m still trying to grapple with my thoughts behind it. Ok…here we go. As most of you probably know, May is Celiac Awareness Month and lots of bloggers […]

Need Your Help Passing the Gluten in Medicine Disclosure Act 2019

They say that common etiquette means not talking about sex, religion or politics. Hmmm…I’ve already talked about sex drive, if sperm is gluten free, and gluten-free sex for only $27. I’ve also discussed if you can pray your celiac away and if a church has the right to ban gluten-free hosts. Since we’ve already pretty […]

$100,000 Lawsuit for Getting Glutened? C’mon!

There is a Twitter account called Endless Screaming. Every time he or she tweets, it’s simply: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! That’s exactly my reaction to a fellow celiac suing a Las Vegas restaurant $100,000 for causing “permanent injury” after getting glutened. I’ll say it again: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Here’s the article. And here’s the Gluten Dude breakdown. A Los Angeles […]

And the Beet Goes On…For 4 Days!

This post may contain a little bit TMI for some folks out there. No…I won’t be talking about Sonny and Cher, but about digestion and my…wait for it…poop. And more specifically how long it takes my body to process food, between the time I eat it and the time it’s outta my system and into […]
