If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you've probably seen some of my yoga posts. I graduated from the Yoga Shanit NYC training last year, and started teaching in early 2016. My classes are a combination of flow and alignment and you'll leave feeling like you worked hard but also relaxed your nervous system. This summer, you have a few opportunities to practice yoga with me - details below!

Push Through Your Fears, It Gets Easier

I was so nervous when I first started teaching, it would make me feel sick to my stomach with stress. I remember talking to my husband about it and saying, I know I have to just push through this, I know it will get easier and everyone feels like this, but this is so hard!

As the months have gone on, I've completely fallen in love with teaching. I kind of feel like it's my calling. That's a scary thing to write.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much my training at Yoga Shanti prepared me and how quickly I've gotten comfortable stepping into the teacher role. I love planning classes, tweaking them throughout the week, and then adjusting them for my students on the fly. I'm still nervous when I teach in new places but I love the energy of the classes and getting to know my students so I can support them to tap into their bodies and find what makes them strong. I'm also proud to help them deepen their practices and try new things as they build strength, all while maintaining a proper foundation and alignment so they don't go to far and wind up hurt.

Yoga Every Damn Day

I found for me it was vital that I know the sequence I teach inside and out in my own body so that I can explain the mechanisms of the poses from a grounded place to my students. I practice almost daily and it's made me so much more aware of how I'm feeling in the poses. I used to injury myself all the time but now my joints feel great, I feel like my skin in glowing, and I'm sleeping better. Yoga is the thing I turn to in times of happiness and in times of stress, it's universally uplifting and beneficial.

Life is crazy, but taking time to do yoga as often as possible, or #yogaeverydamnday makes a huge impact on the way you think and feel. When you are deciding if you can make yoga work into your busy day, just start with this thought: WAIT...BUT FIRST, YOGA.

I've been struggling to write lately. I have a lot on my mind, a lot to say, but I'm not sure where to start. We've been fixing up our house, I want to write about that. I found some great healthy food recommendations, I want to write about them too. But every time I start a post, I'm not sure if it's enough.

I've noticed lately that I've become increasingly affected by what I read online. Sometimes good, oftentimes not. I read about animals suffering from people being careless, I cry for them because they're helpless.  I read a post about a friend's sister who took her own life and think about my high school friend who did the same. Both talented, beautiful, kind hearted people, who never felt like they were enough, even though they had everything going for them. What a waste to never recognize your gifts, your light.

I think back to the time when I was a teenager with a raging eating disorder pretending to be just "fine" but inside believing that I could not possibly ever be enough. It took years for me to overcome those ingrained beliefs, sometimes I still have them. I wish I could go back and tell my teenage self that she was more than enough.

I look at all the posts coming out of the upcoming presidential election. I keep seeing posts about a certain female candidate, and no matter what your political beliefs, or who you want to win, there is a message that seems clear in everything I read. She's not enough. And I can't help but wonder if it's because she's a woman. If this person who has been voted most admired woman 20 times is still not enough to lead our great country, then when will we women be enough in general?

Not that men don't also feel like they're not enough sometimes, but as a woman, who am I supposed to look up to? To aspire to? In the business world, women hold only 4% of the CEO positions of Fortune 500 companies. In the media world we're bombarded with everyday only 26% of leading film roles go to women, and those that do seem to fit a certain type that's unattainable for 99% of women in the world. How are we supposed to feel like we're enough if we never are?

Lately, I've been thinking. I've been sad. I've cried. I've felt more sensitive than I have in years. I'm not sure why, there just seems to be a lot going on in the world, and a lot of it's not great, and I'm feeling the affects. I have hope that as a people, we can do better, we can continue to learn and grow together.

From all of this thinking, I've also started to ponder the good. I realized a shift in myself. I'm happy, even though I'm sometimes sad. I'm no longer that lost girl who never felt good enough, pretty enough, skinny enough. I'm a woman who has started to recognize and own her worth. I wish the same for other women. I'll never feel guilty about what I eat again (and sometimes it's ice-cream for dinner), I won't apologize for voicing my opinion, (because my voice has a right to be heard, and you simply can't please everyone) and I'll never be afraid to love fully (myself and those in my life who deserve it, even when they don't).

I've also recognized my husband's strength.  I'm married to a really capable, confident man, but his strength is the quiet kind. He's a man who lets me be me, and isn't intimidated by my enthusiastic opinions because he has his own. He doesn't try to change me, because he's secure in his own worth. He does things for me not because he has to, but because he wants to, because by taking care of me, he's showing me his love. He found me, loved me, and built me up at a time when I needed it the most. It takes a really strong man to be with a strong woman. I hope my future daughters are full of strength and find a man just like their daddy to nurture and support it. I hope my future sons become the kind of man he is.

There's a lot going on in the world, and a lot of it's not so great. BUT, there's a lot of wonderful people working hard to make a difference. Let's work on building them up. Let's all work a little harder to notice what's around us, and to be a positive influence in the world by being a little kinder, a little more patient, a little less afraid. This is my wish these days.

When we adopted our new dog Brooklyn in November, our boy had a lot going on. He was dealing with skin irritation, a bad hot spot that required him to wear a cone, was on medication for kennel cough, and he was underweight. Poor baby.

To support him, we wanted to get him off of the crappy food he was eating at the shelter and on better quality food quickly  but were conflicted on what brand to try. Bella, our other pup, eats Primal dog food. It's raw, grain free and perfect for her because she gets bladder stones. She's so little she doesn't eat much so it's affordable but we'd have to triple the portion for Brooklyn, and it would be super costly.

Only Natural Pet Food reached out, congratulated me on adopting Brooklyn, and offered to send a month's supply of their food plus treats for him to try.

The verdict? He LOVES it and it's cleared up his skin irritation! His favorite food is the dehydrated beef and sweet potato and the jerky bites have been perfect for his training since we can break them into small pieces. I like Only Natural Pet Food because it's not frozen, I don't have to precut it, and it doesn't make as much of a mess when they eat it.

2016 Goals, nope losing weight isn’t one of them.

DeathtoStock_Clementine12016 is here. Wow. Where is the time going? In 2015 I made a ton of changes, from starting a new job, to moving into a new home, to adopting another dog, to becoming a yoga instructor. We've replaced our roof, settled in and purchased furniture, got solar panels, bought a new car, and learned how to navigate winter in upstate NY (well sort of).

It always surprises me, looking back on the year, everything that I actually do. As my best friend says, we never take on just one thing in our house, we take it all on at once. While we handle that well, I'd like to slow it down a bit this year and just enjoy.

I have three main goals for 2016, they're a blend of personal and professional. You'll notice losing weight and getting healthy isn't on my list. I no longer try to lose weight, I aim for balance. And healthy isn't a destination, it's a lifestyle. So given that, here goes...

#1: Stop worrying so much

While all three are important, this is the goal/resolution that will make the biggest impact in my life. I worry about pretty much everything. Here's a look at my mental monologue:

  • Was that the right choice?
  • Did I say the right thing?
  • How was that interpreted?
  • Do I know enough?
  • Will this work out?
  • Do they like me?
  • What does it all mean?

It's exhausting. And counterproductive. When I worry, I drag my feet and have trouble making decisions. It also stresses me out, makes me tired, and makes me less effective. My goal is to stop worrying and focus on one thing at a time so that it's not all so overwhelming. As long as I have good intentions when making decisions, then it's the right one and I don't have to overthink it to death.

#2: Settle into work

I'm starting to settle into work and find my place already but I'm still the new kid and have a lot to learn, and even more to do. I'm loving it though! I'm being pushed, my opinion is valued, I have ownership over my role, and I really enjoy my coworkers. This year I want to find my groove, watch the small changes add up, and make a real impact in the organization.

#3: Get more organized

I know that if I can get more organized, my quality of life will increase. Plus, I'll feel like more of a grown up. I was thinking about this the other day and realized that I have the same messy habits I did as a teenager, that's no good. It's the one area of my life I've never gotten better at. Our house is pretty big and takes forever to clean if it's not already tidy. This goal would save me time and also give me peace of mind because I wouldn't always have a mental list a mile long of all of the things that need to get done.

If I can accomplish these three goals this year, I'll be set up to take on more in 2017. It's going to be a great year, I can feel it.

Celebrating three beautiful women

Today's post is all about celebrating 3 exceptional women I've been dying to write about.

I haven't posted in awhile, and I'm not proud of it, but life has been a little hectic - in a good way! We adopted a new dog - Brooklyn, he's a nutty monkey and we love him. Bella is doing better than expected, but she's definitely not happy about it.

I'm almost 2 months into my new position and it's been a whirlwind, there's so much to do! I'm getting paid to write. [Full stop] I get giddy whenever that hits me.

Enough about me, let's admire these ladies below.

#1 Adele

Her new album 25, epic. She's sold more copies in the first ten days of its release than every other album sold by artists on the Billboard Top 100 in position 2-100 combined, times two. That's mind boggling. Hello Adele, I hear you, and you're breathtaking.

Amy in the 2016 Pirelli Calendar, so awesome.  Girl is funny, smart, bold, beautiful. I admire her for putting herself out there and owning it. My stomach looks a lot like hers and I would never feel confident enough to post a picture of it, but the truth is, I look at her and I see a woman. She looks amazing - toned where she should be, soft where she should be. #werkitgirl

 

#3 Essena O'Neill

When this came out a few weeks ago, I was like damn, this girl is 18 and she's wayyyyy ahead of women twice her age. So brave. Honestly, I look at pictures of her and think, what a perfect body. BUT, then I realize she's 16 in that picture and didn't eat to look like that. So sad, so unattainable, and so not what should still be considered attractive. It's time for a societal shift and I think she's awesome for bringing attention to how fake the world of insta-perfection is. I wish her the best and hope she finds happiness in herself, she's a beautiful girl inside and out.

Beautifully breathtaking, beautiful body, beautifully brave. Let's celebrate women for who we are as people. We come in all shapes and sizes, bring so many different talents to the table, and love so big. Go find a woman you love and tell her what you admire about her. #celebratewomen

Alright boys and girls, here is my whole post, three little words...

Take the leap.

That's it, the whole shebang. I could end this here, but I won't.

Instead, I'll tell you a little story that will hopefully inspire you to move forward with your dreams. Write, paint, create, dance, sing, laugh, love, do it all.

Recently I was afraid to leave my comfortable job and start fresh in a new environment. Last year, I was terrified to buy a house and move out of the NYC. Years ago, I was nervous about moving in with my now husband.

Notice a pattern? Just about everything scares me.

Making big decisions doesn't get any easier over time, but these things have collectively led me to today. I'm so glad I took the leap in these situations instead of letting my fears paralyze me because life is so good, and it just keeps getting better.

My commute no longer involves stressful traffic, long hours, and too many people. I drive by cows, mansions, wineries, historic small towns, and beautiful foliage. It's awesome and so peaceful.

I get eight hours of sleep again. I have time to cook and work out. I'm creatively fulfilled and I'm intellectually challenged. And the people that I was worried about missing? We've been touching base a lot; those are real friends that won't fade away.

Do I still have stress? Yes. Do I have things figured out. No. Is my life perfect? Hell no.

Am I mentally and emotionally fulfilled. Hell yea!

So just fucking do it. Stop letting your fears stand in your way, and take the opportunity that's in front of you, whatever it may be. Things have a way of working out if you get out of your own way and let them.

Marley Spoon sent me a meal kit this week and it turned out delicious.

We made kimchi pancakes with sesame spinach & rice and quinoa burgers. My husband was my sous chef and it turned into an awesome date night filled with beer and fun music. I couldn't stop eating the kimchi pancakes, they were AH-mazing!

We had plenty of leftovers for multiple meals and I was able to share with my Mom. Here's a direct quote from her:

"This burger is the closest thing I've had to the real deal since I became a veg 20 years ago, are you sure there's no meat in here?"

Followed by:

"Umm, yumm, ummm" (sounds of enjoyment).

Pros:

  1. Easy to follow recipes and beautiful images.
  2. No food shopping required, saving time and energy.
  3. Everything came pre-portioned, no waste!
  4. I learned how to make new dishes and can now personalize them adding some Whole Foodie Booty pizazz.
  5. They included a hand written note as a nice touch and their branding looks great.
  6. I learned how to make the perfect caramelized onions- my husband was raving about them.
  7. The food turned out so good!

Cons:

  • The cook time took significantly longer than expected.
  • I would have preferred organic spinach and brown rice to white rice; we subbed in whole wheat flower when the recipe called for all purpose.
  • Since I don't usually follow recipes I felt like a chicken without a head running around trying to do everything perfectly and in order. This is more of a personal con but if you're like me, I recommend cooking one meal at a time instead of trying to do two at once.

My overall recommendation is to check out Marley Spoon! Whether you order weekly, or for a fun stay at home date night, you won't be disappointed by the easy, flavorful recipes that will change-up your weekly routine.

Big life changes happening!

As you know, last year I moved out of the Brooklyn to my dream house in the Hudson Valley. This whole time, I've been commuting to my job of 7 years, giving me a chance to adjust to the change and still be in NYC. It's been a good transition. I needed to still be able to go to yoga after work or grab drinks with a friend as I adapted to not living in the City. But...

The commute is too much. I'm honestly exhausted from it and don't have time during the week for much else. I never sleep enough and my exercise routine is suffering. Keeping a nice clean house and cooking dinner? Quite a challenge. So...

I'm starting a new job! I got an awesome opportunity from an amazing company in Warwick, NY and I couldn't be happier. It's going to be a challenge but I'm going to learn so much.

It's nerve wracking because so much of my identity has been wrapped up in my job and in NYC for so many years but this just feels right. Things are coming full circle and I'm coming home again but on my own terms. It's exciting, scary, bittersweet, and hopeful all at once.

As of this Friday, I'll officially be an upstate girl again. I'm bringing a little city chic to the country. Wish me luck!
